RESEARCH - What is genre?

Genre is a specific type of product. For example, film, book or music. For us we will focus on film genres.
There are also sub-genre’s which is the sub-division of a genre, such as crime horror or paranormal horror.
A hybrid genre is when there is two or more genres blended into one such as romance comedy.
Codes and conventions are things that add up to make that film that kind of genre. It’s what classifies it as different from the others.
Genre tropes are things associated with the genre like a scream in a horror or a happy ending at the end of romance comedies.
3 different genre stills:

Letter to Juliet – Romance comedy
They usually have a stereotype beginning and end of something going wrong in the womans life and they find a man but something else goes wrong with him. It means they can be together but in the end they realise they love one another and end up together happily.

This is one of my favourite genres because it gives the happy ending everyone hopes for with some laughs along the way. It is enjoyable (in some ways relatable) and you can look forward to the ending

Mission Impossible – Action
In these films there is usually a crisis or a villain and a hero. The hero has to stop the villain, whatever his plans are and has to go through many obstacles and problems on the way.

This is also another favourite because these movies keep on the edge of my seat and keep me anticipating what’s coming net and whether they can do it.

The Martian – Sci-fi
This genre is usually based in science or anything around science. There is a problem and scientists have to find a way to fix it. There are a lot of theoretical based ideas around them and a lot of editing and effects.

This is also a favourite because, I recently watched the Martian and it kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to see what could happen next and considering in sci-fi movies a lot of things have a big potential to go wrong, a lot of things do meaning it’s even more intense.
