What is genre?
Genre simply means type or category. We use genre to categories products with similar qualities. Genre is very important in the film industry because it allows people to have certain expectations for a film allowing them to be familiar with the style of film. It allows the audience to develop personal tastes allowing them to differentiate their likes from their dislikes. Genre also helps the audience establish specific codes and conventions that filmmakers often follow making the film look a certain way which achieves a specific effect or attract a specific audience.
Sub genre:
A subdivision of film.
Hybrid genre:
A cross genre. This blends themes and elements from two or move genre of film.
Genre Tropes:
A common or overused theme. A cliche.
Mad Max: Fury Road (action movie)
Action tends to be one of my favourite genre film as they are able to keep you gripped into the movie. Action movies often keep you guessing which is exciting as you do not want a movie to be predictable. I also like these movies as they tend to be very high tech which big machinery, a large weapons. Action movies often include some sort of hero and villain which results into a 'cat and mouse chase' like in Mad Max: Fury road Immortan Joe (the villain) is chasing Imperator Furiosa and Max Rockatansky (the heroes) throughout the movie.
This is the end (comedy movie)
Comedy is one of my favourite genres of film as they allow to escape reality without trying to hard. Comedies tend have quite clumsy ‘idiotic’ characters that contrast to the ‘normal’ characters, this causes all your focus to go this character/s.
The notebook (romance movie)
Also romance is one of my favourite genres of film. Romance movies are often aimed at the female audience as women tend to be more open about their emotions than men. Romance movies tend to be very emotional we often watch them for a happy ending which is quite often received but throughout there are many other emotions felt as normally they contain some sort of emotional feeling e.g someone falling ill or passing away.
